‘Tis the season for office parties, Santa visits and family gatherings. Ensure you are face-to-face and camera ready for all of the upcoming festivities. Adult Dentistry can make sure your dental health survives Halloween and looks better than ever for the upcoming holidays. Before you enjoy all of the treats, sweets and meet-and-greets that come with this time of year, come in for an oral hygiene check-up and ZOOM! Teeth Whitening session.

What is ZOOM! Teeth Whitening?

ZOOM! Teeth Whitening is a process performed at the dentist’s office by your dentist or a trained clinician. It is considered to be the fastest and most effective form of teeth whitening. The process usually takes under an hour from start to finish.

Before your appointment for ZOOM! your dentist will usually schedule a regular cleaning and ensure that you don’t have any current dental problems that need to be addressed first. More details at The Dental Guide

Brighten Your Smile Fast with ZOOM! Whitening Treatment

Have you noticed your smile is less than radiant lately? If you enjoy red wine, coffee or tea on a regular basis you may notice that they, along with other beverages and foods, are staining your teeth. In addition, teeth naturally dim with age as the dentin within the tooth darkens over time. If you think making your teeth four to seven shades brighter in just one appointment would be beneficial to your smile (and who wouldn’t?), it’s time to book a ZOOM! Teeth Whitening appointment at Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne.

Take 10 Years Off Of Your Smile

In addition to compromising your smile, studies show that yellowed teeth can add 10 years to your appearance. We can turn back the clock and revitalize your pearly whites with our simple and effective in-office ZOOM! Whitening procedure. The process couldn’t be simpler: A special gel is placed on your teeth and activated with an ultraviolet light. All you do is relax while your teeth get whiter. The procedure is painless and quick and you get immediate results from your treatment.

Designed for today’s busy patients

Whether patients want a confidence boost or just to look their best, whitening remains the most-requested cosmetic dental procedure. But with increasing demands on their time, today’s patients want whitening options that fit their lifestyle and fast results with little or no discomfort. That’s what Philips ZOOM! provides. Our Halloween Tips for a Healthy Smile

Vector ID:125590312

Enjoying all of those tasty Halloween treats — and the following holiday sweets as well — will be much easier when your mouth is in optimum health. Exposed cavities and tender gums will not mix well with an onslaught of sugar and candy galore. It is vital to enjoy your treats in moderation and practice good oral hygiene to protect your smile.

You can minimize the cost of your indulgence by analyzing your candy and limiting yourself to the treats that will be least harmful to your teeth.  The following post from the Academy of General Dentistry provides some eye-opening insight into which candies are better and which are worse for your dental health.

“Of course, dentists do not advocate that children eat large amounts of sugary treats, but it is that time of year, so we want to clarify for parents which treats are better for their kids’ teeth and which ones may increase the risk of developing cavities,” says Academy of General Dentistry spokesperson Cynthia Sherwood, DDS, FAGD.

Worst:

  • Chewy/sticky sweets, such as gummy candies, taffy, and even dried fruit can be difficult for children and adults to resist, and even more difficult to remove from teeth. “These candies are a serious source of tooth decay, particularly when they get stuck in the crevices between teeth, making it nearly impossible for saliva to wash them away,” Dr. Sherwood says.
  • Sour candies are highly acidic and can break down tooth enamel quickly. The good news: Saliva slowly helps to restore the natural balance of the acid in the mouth. Dr. Sherwood recommends that patients wait 30 minutes to brush their teeth after consuming sour/acidic candies; otherwise, they will be brushing the acid onto more tooth surfaces and increasing the risk of enamel erosion.

Best:

  • Sugar-free lollipops and hard candies stimulate saliva, which can help prevent dry mouth. “A dry mouth allows plaque to build up on teeth faster, leading to an increased risk of cavities,” Dr. Sherwood says.
  • Sugar-free gum can actually prevent cavities as it not only dislodges food particles from between the teeth but also increases saliva — which works to neutralize the acids of the mouth and prevent tooth decay. Read more at Know Your Teeth

What to Do With Extra Candy?

Here at Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne, we’ve heard all sorts of creative ways our patients with children have minimized the candy consumption in their homes. They include purchasing candy from their kids, inaugurating a year-round candy bowl (stocked wisely and with controlled access) in lieu of Halloween’s sugary free-for-all, and donating excess treats to the local food bank. These are all great ideas, and here are more excellent suggestions from Parenting.com, including:

Use it for your kid’s birthday party

  • Make a board game and use the candy as playing pieces.
  • Create DIY candy necklaces.
  • Stuff it into a piƱata.

Send it overseas
Groups like Operation Shoebox, which supports our troops, will gladly take donations as will groups for the homeless and disadvantaged. See Parenting.com for more outstanding ideas

Brush & Floss To Avoid Tooth Nightmares

Halloween is the perfect time to (re)commit to a good daily oral hygiene regimen. Remember that your children and grandchildren watch your teeth cleaning habits. After everyone has had their scary sugar treats, participate with the kids in a dedicated brushing and flossing time. Your example can help instill among your loved ones a lifelong commitment to maintaining a healthy smile.

Dental Solutions in Charlotte

Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne offers a multitude of general and cosmetic dental services to maintain, improve or completely transform your smile. Dental implants, veneers, same-day crowns, ZOOM! tooth whitening, Invisalign clear orthodontics and multiple types of sedation dentistry are just some of our specialities.

Straight Teeth By The Holidays With Invisalign

Would you like to have a brilliant new smile for this years’ holiday photos? If your teeth are crooked or misaligned, Invisalign can quickly and easily make your dental goals a reality. In just a few short months these clear, removable aligners can give you the ideal smile you’ve long dreamed of.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign straightens your teeth using a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth. They gradually and gently shift your teeth into place. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. You just pop in a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks, until your treatment is complete. You’ll achieve a great smile with little interference to your daily life. More details from Invisalign

A variety of misalignment issues can be fixed with Invisalign including: crossbites, overbites, open bites and underbites. Invisalign can address over-crowding issues as well. Dr. Robert Harrell and his highly skilled team at Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne have created countless beautiful smiles with Invisalign and they want you to be their next satisfied patient. Keep reading to learn more about just a few of the smile issues Invisalign can correct.

Treatable Cases

From mild cases of crooked teeth and protruding teeth, to much more difficult dental problems involving serious malocclusion, overbite, or underbite, Invisalign® effectively corrects a wide variety of dental problems. Whether your teeth are widely gapped, overly crowded or somewhere in between, Invisalign has an affordable teeth straightening option for you.

Gapped Teeth

Gaps between teeth can occur with abnormal continued growth of the jawbone. Missing teeth can also cause the surrounding teeth to shift due to the extra space, creating gaps in your teeth. Spacing issues and gaps between teeth can lead to gum problems (due to lack of protection by the teeth), periodontal pockets and increased risk of periodontal disease.

Overbite

Overbite occurs when the upper teeth bite over the lower teeth. It’s typically caused by genetics, bad oral habits, or overdevelopment of the bone that supports the teeth. This can lead to gum problems or irritation, and/or wear on the lower teeth, and can cause painful jaw and joint problems. Learn more at Invisalign

More than Just a Gorgeous Smile

Helping our clients achieve the highest standard of oral health is our goal at Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne. Straight teeth (that are not wrapped in wire braces) are an important part of that mission because they are easier to clean and maintain. The benefits of a healthy smile go well beyond simple aethestics.

Healthier Teeth And Gums

Swollen, red gums can often be the result of having teeth that are crowded or too widely spaced. Unfortunately, these are also signs of periodontal disease. When teeth are properly aligned, it helps the gums fit more securely around the teeth, allowing for the strongest and healthiest defense against potential periodontal problems. That’s where Invisalign comes in. The comfortable and clear aligners gently and gradually begin to move your teeth into the proper position — without unsightly brackets and wires.

Easier Cleaning

One of the biggest challenges of having braces is removing all the food that gets trapped in the brackets and wires. This can often lead to plaque buildup and eventually tooth decay. With Invisalign, the aligners are removable, so it’s easy to continue brushing and flossing your teeth the way you normally do. Read more at Invisalign

Another year, another acknowledgment that Dr. Robert Harrell of Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne is one of the best dentists in Charlotte. He has been named to the distinguished list of outstanding dentists and specialists compiled by industry leader topDentists. The honor is based on the results of an extensive peer-review survey of Charlotte-area dentists and specialists. Dr. Harrell has made the list a number of consecutive years, a sign of the high regard his fellow dental professionals have for him.

The letter announcing Dr. Harrell’s impressive achievement also explains the selection process in greater detail. It is reprinted below.

Dear Dr. Harrell:

We are pleased to inform you that you have been selected by a vote of your peers to be included in the 2016 database of topDentists. The listings for the Charlotte metro area now appear online at http://ift.tt/2cBfpUN and will also be publishd in the November issue of Charlotte Magazine.

With over fifty years in combined experience compiling peer-review professional referral guides, we have been able to use our experience along with the input of dentists across the United States to create a methodology that has been refined and improved over previous superlative guides.

Again, our congratulations on being honored by your peers.

Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne: Is Your Smile Fall Fabulous?

After a summer of entertaining and indulging, how is your smile looking these days? Have those extra glasses of wine with all your entertaining and those additional s’mores around the campfire dulled your gleam? Well, not to worry. Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne has everything necessary to restore the brilliance of your pearly whites.

Whitening Treatment

Did you know that our teeth naturally yellow with age? This can inadvertently add years to your smile and your overall appearance. Dr. Robert Harrell and his top-notch team at Adult Dentistry can transform your smile easily and efficiently. Book your ZOOM! Whitening treatment today to prepare for the upcoming holidays and all of the photos that accompany them.

Let’s take a closer look at what happens when your teeth darken.

Most causes of tooth discoloration fall into two broad categories: extrinsic and intrinsic stains. Yellowing can also be caused by a wide array of health factors.

Extrinsic stains

You’ll find extrinsic stains on the surface of the enamel, the hard, outermost layer of your teeth. While enamel is harder than bone, according to the Mayo Clinic, it can still be easily stained.

“The No. 1 cause of teeth yellowing is lifestyle,” said Dr. Justin Philipp of J. Philipp Dentistry in Chandler, Arizona. “Smoking, drinking coffees and teas, chewing tobacco are the worst.”

Not surprisingly, other dark-colored foods and beverages, including red wine, colas, dark sauces and various fruits, such as grapes, blueberries and pomegranates, also have potential to stain teeth. These items are high in chromogens, pigment-producing substances with a penchant for sticking to tooth enamel.

Acidic foods and beverages can worsen matters by eroding tooth enamel and making it easier for chromogens to latch onto the teeth. Tannin, a bitter compound found in wine and tea, also helps chromogens attach to tooth enamel.

Intrinsic stains

Intrinsic stains occur within the tooth, when various factors alter the light-transmitting properties of the enamel and the underlying dentin.

Numerous medications can cause intrinsic stains. If children take the antibiotics tetracycline and doxycycline while their teeth are still developing (before the age of 8), their teeth may turn brownish-yellow. During adulthood, chlorhexidine, an antiseptic used in prescription-strength mouthwash to treat gingivitis, can cause discolorations. Likewise, the acne-fighting drug minocycline, a derivative of tetracycline, stains teeth. Chemotherapy directed at the head and neck and chemotherapy drugs can also result in intrinsic stains. Even relatively common drugs, such as antihistamines, Albuterol and blood pressure medications, can sometimes yellow teeth. See more at Live Science

We Specialize in Confident Smiles

Dr. Harrell has been helping residents in the Charlotte metro region enjoy healthier and happier smiles for nearly two decades. A glowing smile is much easier to achieve and maintain with regular dental hygiene appointments. Being able to greet loved ones, acquaintances, and strangers alike with a beautiful bright smile is something everyone should be able to experience. Top Oral Hygiene Tips for a Radiant and Healthy Smile

Dr. Robert Harrell and his outstanding team at Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne enjoy nothing more than seeing patients improve their oral health from one office visit to the next. Following a daily protocol of healthy oral hygiene habits can help your smile remain its very best between appointments.

Maintain Adequate Nutrition

The snacks and meals we choose to indulge in directly impact our oral health. Include extra calcium in your diet to ensure you are meeting the daily requirements for your age. Yogurt, almond milk, cheese, cream cheese and dairy milk are excellent sources.

You need plenty of calcium for your teeth. It is essential for the teeth as well as your bones. It is better to drink milk, fortified orange juice and to eat yogurt, broccoli, cheese, and other dairy products. You can also take a calcium supplement, taking different doses according to your age and necessity as per prescription. Calcium and Vitamin D are necessary for maintaining the health of gums and teeth. Vitamin B complex is also essential for the protection of gums and teeth from cracking and bleeding. Copper, zinc, iodine, iron and potassium are also required for maintaining healthy dental hygiene. See more at Arrow Smile Dental

Update Your Gear

Dentists recommend changing your toothbrush once every three months on average. If you suffer from cold sores, a cough or a cold, you can switch it out even sooner. Try out different fluoride toothpastes until you find your family’s favorite flavor, and use a high quality mouth rinse to address any post-brushing germs and plaque.

Correct Angle Brushing

Utilizing your toothbrush on the correct angle is directly related to how effective your brushing is. Use gentle motions to sweep plaque away from the sulcus (the space between a tooth and the surrounding tissue) and keep the gum-line free and clear.

When brushing your teeth, position the bristles at an angle of 45 degrees near the gum line. Both the gum line and the tooth surface should be in contact with the bristles. Brush the outer surfaces of the teeth using a back-and-forth, up-and-down motion, making sure to be done gently in order to avoid bleeding. To clean the inside surfaces of the teeth and gums, place the bristles at a 45-degree angle again and repeat the back-and-forth, up-and-down motion. Lastly, brush the surfaces of your tongue and the roof of your mouth to remove bacteria, which might cause bad breath. From Arrow Smile Dental

Don’t Forget to Brush Your Tongue

Brush your tongue. The best way to combat bad breath is to clean the tongue every week with a Tongue Scrape. The majority of bad breath is caused by substances called “Volatile Sulphurous Compounds” and these are very commonly found on the surface of the tongue. A Tongue Scrape removes the build up of white matter from the tongue and shifts the smelly bits with it. More details at Stone Rock Dental Care

Brush Up on Your Flossing Technique

Waxed dental floss and flossing picks definitely help break up the plaque on your teeth, but they aren’t your best option. The sleek profile of this type of floss typically doesn’t allow for the sticky plaque to attach itself easily. The results obtained with expanding dental floss are superior, as explained below.

Expanding floss is a dental hygiene product meant to clean between the teeth. It grows thicker when it comes in contact with moisture, like saliva. The friction caused by running the floss between teeth can also cause this type of floss to expand. This expansion may help to produce better results and more effective flossing, because expanding floss is thought to clean more surfaces and wider spaces more thoroughly than other types of floss. Is Tooth Sensitivity Wreaking Havoc On Your Life?

If biting into an ice cream cone or drinking from a cup of hot coffee creates a painful experience, you may have sensitive teeth. Let’s take a closer look at this condition.

Teeth sensitivity is one of the main issues that dental patients report. Enjoying anything that is hot or cold can lead to extreme discomfort for some patients, while others have no issues with temperature but find smiling in the wind unbearable. Whatever the trigger, too many sufferers put off their hygiene appointments due to the fear of uncomfortable teeth cleanings.

adult dentistry of ballantyne charlotte nc 28277 dr. robert harrell dental implants

In healthy teeth, a layer of enamel protects the crowns of your teeth—the part above the gum line. Under the gum line a layer called cementum protects the tooth root. Underneath both the enamel and the cementum is dentin.
Dentin is less dense than enamel and cementum and contains microscopic tubules (small hollow tubes or canals). When dentin loses its protective covering of enamel or cementum these tubules allow heat and cold or acidic or sticky foods to reach the nerves and cells inside the tooth. Dentin may also be exposed when gums recede. The result can be hypersensitivity. See more at Mouth Healthy

Communicate With Your Dental Team

If you are experiencing any sensitivity issues, the best thing you can do is let your dentist and hygienist know. Take note of where and when your sensitivity issues occur so you can describe the circumstances during your next dental visit. Your dental team can use the clues you provide to start the search for the cause, determine why it is happening and set the best course of treatment. Helping your teeth look and feel their very best is what Dr. Robert Harrell and his talented team at Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne do every day.

Causes of Sensitive Teeth

Sensitive teeth can be caused by the following dental issues:

  • adult dentistry of ballantyne charlotte nc 28277 dr. robert harrell sedation dentistryWorn tooth enamel from using a hard toothbrush and using a hard grip while brushing aggressively.
  • Tooth erosion due to highly acidic foods and beverages.
  • Tooth decay, worn leaky fillings and broken teeth that expose the dentin of your tooth.
  • Gum recession that leaves your root surface exposed.
  • Grinding your teeth at night.
  • Post dental treatment sensitivity – common, but temporary, especially with procedures such as crowns, fillings and tooth bleaching.

Preliminary Dental Treatment

Having a conversation with your dentist is the first step in finding relief from your discomfort. Describe your symptoms, tell your dentist when the pain started and let him or her know if there’s anything that normally makes it feel better, such as warm compresses.

After your dentist determines the reason for your sensitivity, he or she will treat the underlying cause. Treatment may be as simple as fixing a cavity or replacing a worn filling. However, if your discomfort comes from gum loss exposing root surfaces, your dentist may suggest a gum graft that a periodontist would conduct to protect the root surface and support of the tooth. More details at Colgate

Unknown Night Grinders

Tooth grinding is another major cause of sensitivity. Many patients are shocked to find out that they grind their teeth because they only do it while sleeping. The tell-tale smooth grooves and flat, worn crowns typically lead to this surprising discovery during a regular dental check-up. If you are experiencing sudden sensitivity, sleep apnea, headaches or a sore jaw upon waking, it might be time to make a near-date dental appointment, even if your regular cleaning is just a few months away. The grinding at night can lead to exposed root surfaces that cause sensitive teeth. Wearing a custom mouth guard to sleep can help you protect your teeth.

Voted one of Charlotte’s best dentists year after year, Dr. Harrell is ready to give you the brilliant, healthy smile you’ve always dreamed of. Call Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne today at 704-541-9888 or use the contact form on this page to set up a new patient exam or dental cleaning. We look forward to hearing from you.

Fruit Sugars: The Secret War On Your Teeth

How many times have you gone to your dental checkup expecting perfect results only to discover that early decay has been detected? Many patients are shocked to learn that a follow-up appointment for tooth-colored fillings looms in the near future. “But, I hardly eat any candy and never drink sugary soft drinks,” is a common response by bewildered patients. Many have no idea just how much sugar they are actually consuming on a daily basis. In fact, one common source of excess sugar is considered very healthy by conventional wisdom.

Fruit Sugars: Hidden Gremlins

If you believe your teeth are free from the ravages of sugar because you don’t partake in daily cupcake consumption, think again. For example…

If you take away the most nutritious parts of a fruit, what are you left with? Sugar water and natural flavors, aka fruit juice.

When a fruit is juiced, all of the sugar comes out of it and into the solution of juice.  This sugar is no different than much of the sugar that is in candy today.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry even recommends restricting the amount of fruit juice that you give your small children to less than one cup per day.  They have recognized the devastating effects that fruit juice can have on kids’ teeth.

adult dentistry ballantyne charlotte nc robert harrell 28277 best dentist cleaning

Is Dried Fruit Good for Your Teeth?

Dried fruit is a convenient, portable snack. It would be an ideal alternative to eating fresh fruit if it weren’t for one thing: Dried fruit is not good for your teeth. For instance, you may be surprised to learn that grapes have relatively little affect on your teeth, but when dried into raisins they can cause cavities. Let’s take a closer look at why dried fruits are an issue.

1 – The sugar is super-concentrated. When you dry fruit, almost all of the water is lost, but no sugar is lost.

2 – Dried fruit is very sticky. I used to eat dried mangoes all of the time and found that they kept getting stuck in my teeth.

3 – When fruit is dried, it releases a lot of the intrinsic sugars from inside of the fruit. These sugars are then available to feed the bacteria in your mouth, which can hurt your teeth.

4 – Dried fruit often has added sugar. This is another one of the ways that manufacturers can sneak sugar into our diet. Popular dried fruit like Craisins Dried Cranberries and many brands of dried mangoes contain added sugar. Read more at Oral Answers

Beware: Sugar is Everywhere

Whatever you do, don’t get into the habit of crawling into bed or falling asleep without completing your nighttime brushing and flossing routine. Not making time to brush for as little as a few weeks can wreak havoc in your mouth.

Q: How bad is falling asleep without brushing your teeth?

A: Most people are shocked to hear this, but going to bed without brushing your teeth is like going to bed with poop in your mouth.

How can that be? Every time you have a meal, the bacteria that naturally reside in your mouth feast on the food you eat. Just like every other living organism, these bacteria excrete waste after a meal. This waste is highly acidic and breaks down tooth enamel, causing root decay and cavities.

When you hit the sack without brushing, plaque starts to harden and calcify on your teeth. Once plaque has calcified, it’s impossible to remove with a toothbrush and floss and can only be removed by the hygienist during a teeth cleaning. More details at Ask The Dentist

Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne: Your Smile Care Team

When is the last time you had a comprehensive oral exam with X-rays? For many people, the first suspicion that they may have dental issues is based on pain. This often also means that the problem has reached a critical stage because it wasn’t detected early. If it’s been a while since you’ve had a thorough dental exam, you should schedule a check-up at Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne, one of the top dental practices in Charlotte. Dr. Robert Harrell and his devoted team utilize the latest technology to create and maintain gorgeous smiles.

Who needs more frequent or regular X-rays?

  • Children and teenagers — Children and teens who have a history of many cavities may need X-rays every six months or every year, depending on age. So may those who have a high risk of decay for other reasons. X-rays also help to keep track of tooth development

  • Adults with many fillings, crowns, bridges or other restorations — X-rays help the dentist find decay beneath your fillings and crowns or in new places

  • People with periodontal (gum) disease — X-rays can reveal signs of bone loss. If this has happened, then you may need periodontal (gum) surgery

  • People with dry mouth, also called xerostomia —Saliva helps keep your mouth and teeth healthy by regulating the acid levels (pH) in the mouth. In a dry mouth, the pH decreases. This causes the minerals in the teeth to break down, resulting in more cavities. Many medicines can cause dry mouth. It also can be a result of cancer treatment or a long-term disease.

  • Smokers — Smoking increases the risk of bone loss around the teeth and periodontal disease.

  • Users of chewing tobacco — Chewing tobacco is sweetened with sugars and can lead to more cavities. See more from Colgate

Potential Health Concerns

Many don’t realize how intricately connected their mouth is with the rest of their bodies. For example, cardiovascular health, respiratory health and being pregnant directly correlate to how healthy your mouth is.

Brushing your teeth, flossing and visiting the dentist keep your teeth and gums healthy, but maintaining good oral hygiene is also important for your overall health, research suggests.

In some cases, oral problems can be a symptom of other diseases, such as diabetes. Research has also linked gum disease to heart disease, premature birth and even knee arthritis.

“The mouth is a portal into the rest of the body,” said Dr. Donald Ratcliffe, chairman of the department of dental medicine at Staten Island University Hospital in New York. Growing research shows “there’s a relationship between the bacteria — and the inflammation that bacteria cause in the mouth — [and] a lot of other diseases,” More details at Livescience

We Treat You Like Family at Adult Dentistry of Ballatyne

Dr. Robert Harrell and his outstanding team at Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne take the time to get to know each patient at their bustling practice. Feeling comfortable and relaxed is a vital component of ensuring success for any dental visit. Dr. Harrell has been voted a top Charlotte Dentist year after year, in part, because he takes his time and treats each patient as if he or she was a member of his extended family.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Is it time for you to address some dental imperfections once and for all? Cosmetic veneers, teeth whitening, dental implants and Invisalign are just some of the cosmetic dentistry procedures offered at Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne. We have multiple options to restore the overall health and vitality of your smile.

Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their color, shape, size, or length.

Dental veneers can be made from porcelain or from resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than resin veneers and better mimic the light reflecting properties of natural teeth. Resin veneers are thinner and require removal of less of the tooth surface before placement. You will need to discuss the best choice of veneer material for you with your dentist. Read more at WebMD

If you don’t suffer from huge underlying issues, cosmetic procedures are a simple option for restoring your smile. Dr. Robert Harrell and his talented team look forward to discussing the potential of your smile with you during your consultation.

Since veneers are individually sculpted for each patient, it is nearly impossible to tell the difference between a veneer and a natural tooth. Unlike natural teeth, custom-made veneers resist coffee and tea stains, and cigarette smoke because they are made of high-tech materials.

With veneers—as opposed to crowns—your natural teeth remain largely intact with only a minimal amount being altered to fit the veneer.

For teeth that resist whitening, veneers can make even the darkest teeth appear bright white.

Dentists may also recommend veneers to quickly fix minor twists, overlaps, and small gaps. Learn more at Your Smile Becomes You

Bright white teeth with ZOOM! treatment

Do you want your teeth to experience a color improvement from 4 to 7 shades lighter after a single treatment? Well, you’re in luck because Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne can help you achieve the brilliant smile you want with a simple in-office ZOOM! teeth whitening appointment.

adult dentistry of ballantyne charlotte nc ZOOM! whitening 28277Teeth Discoloration

Your teeth can give you away if you enjoy coffee, tea or red wine on a regular basis or smoke tobacco products. Sometimes, old dental restorations can dramatically age your appearance due to the discoloration of materials utilized. A healthy, radiant smile does give your face a definitive, youthful glow. If your smile doesn’t make you want to beam, it’s time to book your appointment with the best Charlotte dentist, Dr. Robert Harrell of Adult Dentistry.

Am I a ZOOM! Whitening Candidate?

It is understandable to see why ZOOM! Teeth Whitening is one of the most popular aesthetic dental treatments. There are not many other cosmetic procedures that work as instantaneously to transform your face so immediately. The following common reasons may be at the root of your decision.

Advancing age. As you age, the outer layer of enamel on your teeth gets worn away, revealing the natural yellow color of dentin.

Genetics. Some people have naturally brighter or thicker enamel than others.

Environment. Excessive fluoride either from environmental sources (naturally high fluoride levels in water) or from excessive use (fluoride applications, rinses, toothpaste, and fluoride supplements taken by mouth) can cause teeth discoloration. Read more at WebMD

Quick and Easy

Make the most of your precious time and choose to receive the best visible results in the fastest timeframe. You will need to book a consultation exam to ensure that your mouth is healthy and ready to undergo treatment. Individuals with sensitivity issues may wish to explore other whitening procedures as there is a higher probability that patients with prior sensitivity may experience discomfort after receiving ZOOM! whitening treatment.

The ZOOM! in-office tooth whitening procedure uses the ZOOM! Advanced Power Chairside Lamp – to accelerate the bleaching process – to activate the 25 percent hydrogen peroxide whitening. As the hydrogen peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin to bleach the stained substances, leaving the structure of the tooth unchanged. Read more at Your Dentistry Guide

Treat yourself to the healthy and gorgeous smile that deserves to greet the world and everyone you adore. Your smile is the gateway to your voice, vocal expressions and the backbone of your facial body language. Shave years off your appearance simply by brightening your smile numerous shades in one treatment.

adult dentistry of ballantyne smile teeth ZOOM! Whitening dentist 28277Dr. Harrell and his outstanding staff will discuss your individual treatment protocol. Some patients spread their ZOOM! Whitening treatment over two or three appointments. Your special whitening product will be used together with the cairside lamp to enhance and speed up your whitening treatment. Easy and relaxing, you won’t believe the results you will see within one appointment. Initial appointments average one hour.

Patients receive take-home treatment trays to maintain their glow between appointments. Learn to love your smile and be proud to show it off once and for all. It’s time to unleash your healthy and radiant white smile. We look forward to booking your appointment today.

More Needs To Be Done To End Migraine Stigma

charlotte nc headache center migraine tmj trudenta

About 38 million people in the U.S. suffer from migraines, and more than 4 million experience chronic migraine on a daily migraines. Unfortunately, even with these shocking numbers, there’s still a lot of stigma associated with the condition.

What a lot of people still can’t seem to understand is that migraines are much more than just headaches. They affect every aspect of a person’s life, whether personal or professional. According to the World Health Organization, migraines are among the top 10 disabling lifetime conditions.

However, because of the stigma surrounding migraines, a lot of patients feel guilty or even ashamed to admit they even have the condition. This only serves to worsen the situation. As a result, a lot of migraine sufferers suffer depression, and some even go to the extent of suicide. Jaime Sander shares her story:

Migraine and Suicide: Clearly, It’s Not Just a Headache

On the two occasions when I attempted suicide, I remember feeling: everyone else would be better off without me in their life.

I was traumatized, exhausted and depressed from unrelenting emotional and physical pain.  I just wanted it to end.  Those were very difficult times and Migraine was a big part of them.  The guilt tore at my conscience every minute of the day.  It took a lot of counseling and being on an antidepressant to help get me back on track. A person’s ability to keep a job and have a career may be severely hampered by this condition. Unfortunately, because of the negative view with which migraine sufferers are held, they cannot get the time of day when in need of support from their employers or colleagues. Tammy Rome asks a valid question:

Why isn’t migraine a legitimate reason to miss work?

I’d love to ask this question of every employer I can find. Too many of us have been treated as though we are lying about, faking, or exaggerating our symptoms in order to avoid work or other obligations. Unless you experience the stroke-like symptoms of hemiplegic migraine, no one else can actually confirm that your symptoms are real. I’ve even heard of health care providers who accuse hemiplegic migraineurs of faking it!

What is up with this complete lack of empathy for the 8th leading cause of disability in the world? What did we ever do to deserve this kind of treatment? Part of the problem is the societal view of migraine as “just a headache”. No one thinks of head pain as a serious problem unless there is proof of a tumor, stroke, aneurysm, or concussion. In the absence of these, the typical response is, “Oh, you’re just fine.”

You and I both know that we are anything but fine. Read full post at Migraine.com…

It’s also worth nothing that while migraine disproportionately affects women, this does not mean that men who suffer from migraines suffer less than women. The number of men that suffer from migraines as adults is about a third of the number of women. As a result, the condition is generally considered a woman’s disease, leaving a lot of men without the support they desperately need.

Migraine Stigma May Prevent Proper Diagnosis and Treatment in Men

SAN DIEGO, CA (June 9, 2016) – While migraine is the most common neurological disorder in both men and women, the view that migraine is a women’s disease can cause men to be under diagnosed and under treated, according to a new study presented this week at the 58th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Headache Society.

The Chronic Migraine Epidemiology and Outcomes (CaMEO) Study longitudinally explored migraine epidemiology and associated comorbidities. To extend previous data on gender differences in migraine, this study focused on the determinants and burden of migraine in men and considered whether disease presentation, including sociodemographics, headache symptomology, disability, diagnosis, and treatment, differs in men and women. Read full article at American Headache Society

When it comes to diagnosis and treatment, more than half of all migraine sufferers are never diagnosed, and most of them do not even seek medical attention. This suggests that migraine awareness has a long way to go before it can be claimed that migraine sufferers are receiving the much needed help they deserve.

Pain Free with Sedation Dentistry

Dental phobia interferes with many people’s ability to maintain their standard oral care. It’s easy to decide to cancel your appointment and “re-book later” when you are feeling anxious. If something is painful, discolored, chipped or bothersome in any way, patients may get ahead of themselves in feeling overwhelmed by the thought of treatment. Whether you are afraid of needles, are embarrassed that you have let issues with your smile go so far or deal with ultra-sensitivity, there is no longer a reason to hide from your dentist. Sedation dentistry makes receiving care as comfortable as relaxing in an easy chair.

If you’re afraid of needles, the good news is that one of the most popular methods for sedation is the use of pills. Oral sedation gives us a choice of medications that can be used in various situations. In addition, inhalation conscious sedation — the delivery of nitrous oxide through a mask that fits over the nose — is another method that’s needle-free, and provides a mild sense of euphoria during treatment, with no “hangover” effect afterward. Via Dear Doctor

Needles, Nitrous and Oral Medication

If you are going to have a simple filling, a quick needle and topical anesthetic is a common option. Nitrous oxide is often used by patients of all ages to feel more relaxed and calm while remaining conscious during treatment. However, if you are having a root canal or multiple deep fillings, you may wish to discuss intravenous options for longer and more complicated procedures.

IV sedation offers patients an effective alternative to general anesthesia, especially for those who would want to get a high sedation level, yet would like to avoid general anesthesia simply because they are not medically fit for such or they want to be spared from paying a higher cost, as well face greater risks of complications. Given that patients remain conscious during the procedure, this makes IV sedation a safer alternative. Via Dental Town

General anesthetic is additionally available for patients who qualify and prefer to fall asleep and wake up in recovery. When you are completely put under, you are monitored by an anesthesiologist at all times.

“All dentists who offer the range from mild sedation to general anesthesia must be adequately trained and conversant with advances in these practices. The safety and welfare of the patient is unquestionably the primary concern for all of us who administer these wonderful services.” Via The American Dental Association

Discuss Your Sedation Options

adult dentistry ballantyne charlotte nc 28277 smile best dentistBeing forthcoming about your dental fears will allow the dentist to put your mind about ease and offer the best treatment options. Some people need to use sedation for regular cleanings due to their sensitivity problems. Others will only need sedation for longer or more complex treatments. Everyone is different and there is a safe and effective oral sedation method available for every patient.

Best Charlotte Dentist

Dr. Robert Harrell and his devoted team at Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne are happy to help you navigate through the sedation options to determine which will be the best choice for you. Every patient has different concerns and pain thresholds. What works for some may not be ideal for you. We will work with you to create a sedation dentistry plan that is geared to your unique circumstances.

Minimize Your Appointments

Individuals facing extensive smile restoration may prefer to explore sedation dentistry strictly from a time and cost perspective. Multiple appointments can often be combined if the patient utilizes sedation options. Instead of booking separate appointments, several issues can be addressed at the same visit. This is a major consideration for many.

Leave your fear and anxiety behind and enjoy your dentist appointments from here on out. To learn more about sedation dentistry, schedule a free, no-obligation smile consultation with Dr. Harrell. Call 704-541-9888 or use the contact form on this page to make your appointment. During your consultation a complimentary digital smile preview (an $85 value) will be created to show how you will appear when your sedation dentistry treatment is complete.

Dental Implant Patient Made Our Day

After we placed two dental implants for Edie Ward, she sent us a wonderful note expressing her appreciation for Dr. Harrell and the entire staff. She indicated that she was overjoyed by the “excellent” quality of care she received at Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne. We are humbled by Edie’s heartfelt thanks (read her letter below) and promise to continue to deliver the highest level of care to her and all of our patients at Adult Dentistry.
